The idea of ​​writing you this letter had germinated within me for some time. We all cheered and hoped that you would win the presidential elections and as the votes were counted, for more times in some states, our hearts trembled for the fate that history would have both in your country and in the whole world. We know well that this very serious moment in the history of humanity is of particular importance, because our destiny depends and will depend on the decisions that will be taken by governments in facing the Coronavirus epidemic and the catastrophic consequences on the social and economic level, resulting from it. Without careful and united international action, the war against the invisible enemy constituted by the virus could prove to be long and harmful to regional and international geopolitical balances. Therefore, your country, dear President, is called, as it once was to take a leading role in this war where both vaccines and the logistical means for its administration and dissemination must be prepared as they once were entire industries were converted to support the war effort against the Nazi-Fascist enemy. If I have evoked this specter, it is because we are really facing a huge challenge that risks overwhelming all the democratic, social and economic achievements that civil societies have known up to now. We have seen, Dear President, how the deterioration of economic conditions and endemic poverty in some geographical areas of our planet have affected the transmigration of populations from depressed areas to more fortunate areas. This phenomenon has given rise to crises and conflicts that are still ongoing both in Europe and in your own country where your predecessor, and I would say your predecessors, have resorted to the easy and shameful solution of building walls to defend himself. From what is called by populists around the world as "the invasion of the barbarian hordes". We all know as thinkers and people who care about the fate of this humanity that the appropriate solution is obviously not the construction of walls but the development of a Program of Action to give these peoples that same hope that we ourselves we have received from others. If we do not consider poverty as an enemy like pandemics to which we can react with all means and all determination, we will always have on our conscience this responsibility of not having done anything to save others. Saving the lives of others is our duty and can never be considered or interpreted by populists as an option. And this is the point where I appeal to you as new President of the United States of America to change the approach and try to invest and help poorest nations on the planet. Your country has the means and the ability to make this opportunity to help Africa and the depressed areas of the planet: this is an unmissable opportunity to give new economic, scientific, social and political impetus. The construction of the walls is a shame that will weigh on their creators and their builders. Let’s think about the wall separating israelian and Palestinians and think about a good solution! From this point, I would also start to submit a no less important question concerning the state of international relations, which has seen a growing deterioration in recent years. This represents a danger not only for international peace but for the very existence of man on earth. This question of working towards creating a new era of peace which I would like to be long and interminable, must be a priority and central in its elaboration of a new American foreign policy in the world. You have this great opportunity, dear President Biden, even more urgent and necessary today to change course and to make your Presidency a milestone. You can do it and I am sure of it because you have a broad vision and know the problems of the planet and above all those that oppose peace and harmony between the major superpowers. Let me tell you that continuing on the old path will only bring further damage and failure to your country and to all humanity. By now, if we continue on the same path of harmful and non-concerted economic development, we will not be able to have a healthy and welcoming environment and our own destiny and our very life on earth are compressed forever. It is therefore necessary to take the reins of the conduct of policies in hand and start the renewal that must have the themes of environmental protection, human rights, the development of a model of progress that can be extended and accessible to all peoples, from which to avoid the waves of migrations that occasionally break out on the borders between rich and poor countries of the planet. I would say that the task of a great statesman is what I have just stated. Humanity needs a new era of of freedom and progress and this cannot be achieved without the existence of a new generation of capable and motivated leaders. What I see with regret and pain is only desolation and prevarications in a world blind and deaf to the pains of the weakest. Finally, would I like to dwell on the great ideals and values ​​that the founding fathers had who wrote its own constitution? I would say so many and how much has been done in the course of over two centuries to affirm that vision of an egalitarian and democratic society. Enough but it is not enough. We see this today with the return of the anti-democratic and populist movements that have even dared to march on your sacred democratic institutions. There is a need to reflect on this and I would say never again a president who considers himself above the law in the White House. Not only the American home, so to speak, needs to be settled, but also that of countries where some social and political achievements have returned to question.

The world is at a crossroads in history and tends that you as a man of good will give the beginning to a new era where the lobies and all the other forces that had conditioned the previous development in a negative way must be silent and not harm because otherwise we risk to lose everything, even our dearest achievements and our very life.

Senza un’attenta e solidale azione internazionale, la guerra contro il nemico invisibile costituito dal virus potrebbe rivelarsi lunga e dannosa per gli equilibri geopolitici regionali e internazionali. Quindi, il vostro paese, caro Presidente, è chiamato come un tempo ad assumersi un ruolo guida in questa guerra dove sia i vaccini e sia i mezzi logistici per la sua amministrazione e diffusione debbono essere approntati come un tempo furono un tempo furono convertiti interi industrie per sostenere lo sforzo bellico contro il nemico nazifascista. Se ho evocato questo spettro è perché siamo davvero di fronte ad una sfida immane che rischia di travolgere tutte le conquiste democratiche, sociali ed economiche che le società civili abbiano conosciuto fino ad oggi. Abbiamo visto, Caro Presidente, come il deterioramento delle condizioni economiche e la povertà endemica in alcune aree geografiche del nostro pianeta abbiano inciso sulla trasmigrazione delle popolazioni dalle aree depresse alle aree più fortunate. Questo fenomeno ha dato luogo a delle crisi e dei conflitti che sono tutt’ora in atto sia in Europa sia nel vostro steso paese dove il suo predecessore, e direi i suoi predecessori, abbiamo ricorso alla facile e vergognosa soluzione della costruzione dei muri per difendersi da ciò che viene chiamato dai populisti di mezzo mondo come “l’invasione delle orde barbariche”. Noi sappiamo tutti come pensatori e persone che abbiano a cuore il destino di quest’umanità che la soluzione appropriata non è ovviamente la costruzione dei muri ma la messa a punto di un Programma d’Azione per dare a questi popoli quella stessa speranza che noi stessi abbiamo ricevuto dagli altri. Se non consideriamo la povertà come un nemico al pari delle pandemie di fronte al quale reagire con tutti i mezzi e tutta la determinazione, noi avremo sempre sulla nostra coscienza questa responsabilità di non aver fatto nulla per salvare gli altri. Salvare la vita degli altri è un nostro dovere e non può mai essere considerato o interpretato dai populisti come un’opzione, Ed è qui che mi rivolgo a lei affinché gli Stati Uniti d’America cambino approccio e cerchino di investire e d’aiutare le nazioni più povere del pianeta. Il vostro paese ne ha i mezzi e ne ha la facoltà di fare di quest’opportunità di aiutare l’Africa e le aree depresse del pianeta un’occasione imperdibile per dare nuovi slanci economici, scientifici sociali e politici. Questa questione di lavorare per un creare una nuova era di pace che auspicherei lunga e interminabile, deve essere prioritario e centrale nella sua elaborazione di una nuova politica estera americana nel mondo. Lei ha questa grande opportunità caro Presidente Biden, ancor più impellente e necessaria oggi di cambiare rotta e di fare della sua Presidenza una pietra miliare. Lei ce la può fare e ne sono certo perché ha un’ampia visione e conosce i problemi del pianeta e quelli soprattutto che osteggiano la pace e la concordia tra le maggiori superpotenze. Mi consenta di dirle che continuare sulla vecchia strada porterà solo danni e fallimenti ulteriori al suo paese e all’intera umanità. Oramai se si continua sulla stessa via dello sviluppo economico dannoso e non concertato, noi non potremo avere un ambiente sano e accogliente e il nostro stesso destino e la stessa nostra vita sulla terra sono compressi per sempre. Occorre quindi prendere i redini della conduzione delle politiche in mano e avviare il rinnovamento che deve avere i temi della tutela dell’ambiente, dei diritti umani, dell’elaborazione di un modello di progresso estendibile e accessibile a tutti i popoli, donde evitare le ondate migratorie che scoppiano di tanto in tanto sulle frontiere tra paesi ricchi e poveri del pianeta. Direi che il compito di un grande statista è quello che ho appena enunciato. L’umanità ha bisogno di una nuova era di pace, di libertà e di progresso e questo non si può realizzare senza l’esistenza di una nuova generazione di leader capaci e motivati. Quel che vedo con rammarico e dolore è solo desolazione e prevaricazioni in un mondo cieco e sordo ai dolori dei più deboli. Vorrei solo soffermarmi infine sui grandi ideali e valori che avevano i padri fondatori che scrissero la sua stessa costituzione? Tanti direi e quanto si è fatto nel corso di oltre due secoli per affermare quella visione di una società egualitaria e democratica? Abbastanza ma non è sufficiente. Lo vediamo oggi con il ritorno dei movimenti antidemocratici e populisti che hanno persino osato di marciare sulle vostre sacre istituzioni democratiche. In ciò c’è da riflettere e direi mai più un presidente che si considera al di sopra della legge nella Casa Bianca. C’è da sistemare non solo la casa americana, per così dire, ma anche quella di paesi dove si è tornati a mettere in dubbio alcune conquiste sociali, politiche.

Il mondo è ad un bivio della storia e tende che lei da uomo di buona volontà dia l’inizio ad una nuova era dove i loby e tutte le altre forze che avevano condizionato lo sviluppo precedente in maniera negativa debbono tacere e non nuocere perché altrimenti rischiamo di perdere tutto, persino le nostre più care conquiste e la stessa nostra vita.

Che il mio appello giunga a lei come la luce del sole tocchi la terra.
