Berthe Morisot 1841-1895: Catalogue

Time flows like a sunbeam’s dart
A rapid flash that tires the heart
While silence reigns upon my hill
With ancient dread and burning will
The wave caresses my soft breast
But gives my poem's cry no rest
I watch my star in darkest night
By melancholy quenched of light
No one on earth can soothe my grief
Alone this eve, I seek relief
I trust my words into the breeze
And pray to the universe on my knees
I live on old images today
Of open arms in friendly way
You flee my paths, so small and wild
Hard to grasp, a stubborn child
Be you my Beatrice, shining bright
Through winding paths of life and night
A sudden flash to clear my mind
In this frail earth, so lost and blind
Will your gay smile return to me?
Will your soft breath come back to sea?
O rebel wave of my own deep!
Just like a short and fleeting dream
Great love, infinite and high
Praised and mocked as days go by
If my desert fades today
Tomorrow withered flowers will play
